The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League 2008 - 2009
The Scottish Premier League (SPL) is the top level of professional football in Scotland and currently consists of 12 member clubs. Since 1999 the SPL has been independent of the Scottish Football League (SFL), which now comprises 30 clubs organised into three divisions. There is no pyramid system as exists in England so there is no way that a club playing outside the SFL/SPL structure can join unless a vacancy arises. This situation arose in the close season when Gretna, relegated from the SPL and in administration, were wound up in May.
