Scottish Premiership 2013 - 2014

spfl logoFaced with the prospect of the First Division clubs breaking away, the SFL members voted on 12 June in favour of the plan put forward by the SPL to merge the two competitions. Although the new title incorporates the initials of both leagues, this is effectively a takeover by the Scottish Premier League. The current 12-10-10-10 structure stays in place, at least for the time being, and plays-offs between the top level and second tier are introduced involving the team finishing 11th in the top tier and the second, third and fourth teams from tier two.

It's good to see the Dons back in all-red once more but I'm not sure about the big V insert round the collar. The away strip is Adidas' Toque 13 design.

Celtic ran away with the title last season and won the Scottish Cup with their only serious rival despatched to the Third Division. Last season's fine commemorative strips are replaced with something more contemporary from Nike's designers. The characteristic hoops are now each formed of seven thin separate green bands. An alternate version was worn in a Champions' League fixture in Kazakhstan where the advertising of alcohol is forbidden. The away strip in familiar yellow and green has seven bands across the chest: the theme is inspired by the great Celtic players who have worn the number seven in the past.

United have made a bit of an effort with Nike this season. The home shirt grades from orange to black on the front (the reverse is all orange), which makes for a dramatic effect teamed with black shorts and socks. The away strip offers a high degree of contrast and features a neat collar. The third strip, which will be worn mainly in cup matches, is presented as a "heritage kit" and is a re-creation of the change strip worn 50 years ago in 1963-64. The kit is completed with a period crest and will be worn without players' names on the back.

For the first time, sponsored socks have appeared, an innovation that we could definitely do without.

The new Hearts kits are standard Adidas templates, the home version (Tiro 13) featuring the latest "bat wing" sleeves.

With their parent company filing for bankruptcy, their chairman Vladimir Romanov allegedly on the run from Lithuanian police and a winding-up order pending over unpaid UK taxes, Hearts face serious problems and their future may lie in a take over by the Foundation of Hearts. Having entered administration over the summer, the club face being docked up to 15 points in 2013-14.

Hibs have signed up with Nike who have produced a very conservative home outfit that returns to emerald green after Puma's darker version seen last season while the away strip is all-black.

Errea have a reputation for innovative design that is refreshing in these days of standard templates from the big global manufacturers and they have produced a little stunner with Caley Thistle's new away strip. The home strip is, as usual, retained for a second season. Last seaon's white alternative was used at Ross County.

Kilmarnock started out wearing their home kit from last season, unveiling their new strip on the eve of their home game against Hibs. This is a straightforward interpretation of their classic 1960's outfit, designed by Martin Le Roy but intended for use next season, which will be the 50th anniversary of Killie winning the Scottish Championship. Alternate socks were worn until the registered versions were delivered at the end of September. The away shirt is unchanged but is now worn with navy rather than red shorts.

Motherwell's distinctive amber & claret shirts always look best worn with traditional white shorts in my humble opinion and the hooped socks are a nice retro touch. Perhaps the claret side panels are a refinement too far so 7/10 for the home kit.

Away

Designer: Joma

To celebrate their return to the top flight, Thistle have adopted a home shirt in the popular vertical stripes that made their first appearance in 1975. By recent standards the away strip is conservative and rather a disappointment after the striking, bespoke kits worn over the last few seasons, being a standard Joma template. The choice of black, grey and white is at least distinctive.

For their second season in the top tier, Ross County are once again in all-navy with white/red detailing but without the dramatic vertical stripe. The away kit is also more conventional.

Last season the Saints met Turkish side, Eski┼čehirspor in the Europa League, their first European fixture for a decade. Although they lost the tie, fans and officials were made so welcome in Turkey that a supporter, Kevin Heller, proposed that St Johnstone adopt their opponent's colours for their new change strip.

Joma's Tek Fluor home kit was launched with a video worthy of a trailer for the next Star Wars movie.

The Scottish League Cup winners' new home strip is a neat interpretation of their traditional colours, which always looks best with white shorts. The black panel on the away shirt features a traditional paisley pattern sublimated into the fabric, a very nice touch. Both the manufacturer and the shirt sponsor are part of the JD Sports group.
