Although Brazil dominated in the early stages, it was Japan that scored first thanks to Yuki Ogimi (27 min). Brazil attacked relentlessly in the second half while the Japanese used their fast strikers to launch quick counter-attacking moves. Their plan paid off in the 73rd minutes when Shinobu Ohno put the result beyond doubt.

Team GB never really got into the game and after the Canadians had established a two-goal lead within half-an-hour of the kick-off, they remained in control for the rest of the match. The crowd of almost 29,000 gave the British women a standing ovation at the end.

Goals from Ogimi and Sakaguchi were enough to take the women's world champions through to the Olympic final but they had to survive a determined assault from France in the second-half. Le Sommer pulled one back after 76 minutes. Moments later they could have equalised from a penalty but Elise Bussaglia fired wide and in the closing moments only a fine save by Japan's goalkeeper, Fukumoto, secured the result.

Canada held the lead three times thanks to a hat-trick from Christine Sinclair but every time they got their noses in front, the USA came back and equalised. The pace and excitement continued in extra-time but with no more goals at the end of 120 minutes, the match seemed certain to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. With three minutes of injury-time played, however, Alex Morgan scored a terrific headed goal that put the United States into the final.

The United States team defended their Olympic title in front of a record crowd of 80,203. Goals early in each half set them on the way but Ogimi pulled one back in the 63rd minute to set up a nerve wracking final half-hour. The USA have now won four out of a possible five Olympic gold medals.
