FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 Group C

fifa womens world cup 2007 logoNorway were ranked third in the world and had qualified undefeated. Australia had transferred to the Asian Football Confederation in 2006 in order to play in a more competitive environment. To mark this they had been awarded hosting rights for the finals of the 2006 AFC Women's Asian Cup which was played in Adelaide. The Matildas lost in the final to China which qualified them for the World Cup. Ghana had, as was becoming customary, qualified as runners-up to Nigeria in the 2006 African Women's Championship

A win for Canada would see them in the knock-out phase and they could not have asked for a better start, Tancredi scoring in the first minute. Collete McCallum equalised eight minutes into the second half but Christine Sinclair restored Canada's lead in the 85th minute. In the second minute of added time, however, the Matilda's captain, Cheryl Salisbury pounced on a loose ball in the box and side footed it home. The result put Australia through and Canada on the 'plane home.
