A vastly superior midfield and searching passes that regularly left Mexico exposed at the back were the key to Germany's emphatic victory. Grings completed a hat-trick in added time and her team could easily have scored more than six.

Brazil were already through and Germany needed just one point to be sure of joining them but anyone who assumed they might play out a tame draw was mistaken. Prinz opened the scoring for Germany in the eighth minute but goals from Kátia (15') and Sissi (20') put Brazil ahead. Immediately after the break, Wiegmann equalised with a penalty. Stephanie Jones put Germany ahead for the second time (58') but in a final flourish, Maycon levelled the scores in the 94th minute.

If Germany lost in Landover Italy would still need a big win to surpass their goal difference record. In the end it was all academic but at least Italy recorded their first win. Mexico returned home pointless.
