Spain outclassed Ukraine in every department and went for the jugular from the kick off. Alonso opened the scoring (13') and David Villa added their second with a deflected free-kick four minutes later. In the second half Villa scored again, this time with a penalty, after Vaschuk had been sent off for pulling back Torres. The best was saved to last when Fernando Torres finished off a wonderful move with a drive from the edge of the area.

Tunisia scored first (Jaziri 23') but in the second hald, Saudi Arabia came back strongly. Al-Qahtani equalised with a deft flick in the 57th minute and then, with six minutes left, Al-Jaber came off the bench and put Saudi Arabia into the lead. The match was not over however and in the second minute of injury time Bolton Wanderers' striker, Radhi Jaïdi headed home to level the scores.

Ukraine recovered from their heavy defeat against Spain by giving a poor Saudi side a thorough seeing-to. Rusoi put Ukraine ahead in the fourth minute from a corner and from then on it was one-way traffic.

Tunisia found themselves unexpectedly in the lead in the eighth minute after Joahar Mnari scored at the second attempt. Tunisia held out and rode their luck as Spain pressed until the 71st minute when the Tunisian goalkeeper, Boumnijel, spilled the ball and Raúl pounced. Minutes later Fernando Torres flicked the ball into an empty net with Boumnijel out of position and in stoppage time he converted a penalty.

Spain made eleven changes and still won at a canter against a Saudi team that was more concerned with keeping score respectable than going for an admittedly unlikely four-goal win that would have seen them in with a chance of progressing.

A narrow win against a Tunisian team reduced to ten men after Ziad Jaziri was red carded just before half-time was enough to take Ukraine into the knock out phase. The match was a poor affair and was only settled by a penalty taken by Shevchenko in the 70th minute.
