UEFA Euro 2000 Knock-Out Stages

euro 2000 logoThe Golden Goal rule, introduced in Euro 96, was again used to decide matches that went into extra-time, the first team to score in the added period being declared the winner. If there was no score in extra-time, the match was decided by penalty kicks.

France, riding their luck and benefitting from several dramatic late goals, finished as champions and became the first team ever to hold both the World and European titles.

King Baudouin Stadium, Brussels (47,000)
28 June 2000

After a cagey opening, France started to take control but it was Portugal who scored with their first chance of the match after 19 minutes. Thierry Henry leveled the scores six minutes into the second half and France tightened their grip. Both teams had chances but could not find a winner. In extra-time the pattern continued, France pressing forward and Portugal mounting fast counter-attacks. It looked as if penalties would be needed to decide the game until the referee awarded France a controversial penalty with three minutes remaining. Zidane converted and the match ended.

(Italy won 3-1 on penalties)

Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam (51,300)
29 June 2000

Italy played for much of the match with ten men after Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off after 34 minutes. The Dutch pressed but were unable to take advantage of the extra space against a determined Italian defence and were made to rue two misses from the penalty spot in normal time. In extra-time, with the golden goal rule in operation, the Netherlands became more wary of Italian counter-attacks and both teams missed chances. In the end the Dutch went out of a major competition on penalties for the fourth time in eight years.

With Italy seconds from victory, having taken the lead ten minutes into the second half, Sylvain Wiltford broke free on the left of the penalty area and sent a low drive into the net in the fourth minute of injury time. Buoyed up by their miraculous escape, the French made most of the running in extra time and Trezeguet smashed home a first-time shot in the 103rd minute to secure a French win.
