FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 Group B

2015 fifa women's world cup posterTwo time winners, Germany, were among the favourites for the competition and were number one in the FIFA rankings before the tournament began. They are known as Die Nationalelf but disappointingly for English speakers this is not a reference to mythological creatures, translating as National Eleven. Norway are also previous winners, having lifted the World Cup in 1995, the Olympics (2000) and the European Championships (1987, 1993). Thailand made their first appearance in the World Cup finals. Their first choice colours are red but the team wore their blue alternative strip, supplied by Thai company Grand Sport, in their three games. This was also the first time that Cote d'Ivoire had qualified.

Within 35 minutes Germany were 5-0 up but there was no suggestion that they would ease up and they had doubled the score by the time the final whistle went. They fell just short of equalling their record of 11-0 against Argentina in 2007.

After conceding an early lead, Norway held on despite coming under sustained heavy pressure before regaining their composure. In the second hald they dominated for long periods and thoroughly deserved their equaliser, scored by Maren Mjelde from a free-kick.

Although the team's first choice kits provided perfect contrast, both changed so that Germany played in red (Norway's colour) while the Scandinavians played in white (Germany's colour). Go figure.

Thailand came back after conceding a goal in the opening minutes and were leading 3-1 before Nahi scored a late goal for the west African team. Cote d'Ivoire could count themselves unlucky, having struck the woodwork three times.

Germany, inexplicably in red once again, cruised to an easy win and a place in the last 16. Thailand would be eliminated after all the groups were completed, due to their poor goal difference.

Hegerberg opened the scoring for Norway in the sixth minute but there were no more goals until an hour had been played, and then three came in a rush.
