The FA Women's Super League 2012

fa womens super league logoFormed in 2011, the FA WSL (Women's Super League) is the highest level of women's football in England, sitting above the Women's Premier League (WPL), which now forms the second tier. There is at present no promotion or relegation between the two competitions. The WSL is a semi-professional competition running from April to October (the WPL continues to operate a winter season) and the champions qualify for the UEFA Women's Champions League.

The eight member clubs are all associated with (male) professional clubs and operate under a two-year FA licence, a system that the FA has been unwilling to introduce to the men's game. Plans exist to expand the league to 12 teams over the next four years and integrate into a national pyramid structure by 2014.
